Yacht Charter FAQs

Are yacht charters only offered as weekly leases?

Typically, yacht charters begin and end on Saturday. Of course, there are always exceptions depending on the season, type, and location of the charter. For example, smaller yachts are commonly considered for day charters or long weekends.

How do I choose the right yacht for me?

Several factors help determine personal yacht choice - number of guests, sailing experience, degree of labor you're willing to undertake, expected comfort level and, of course, your budget, to name a few. All of which, the knowledgeable ALLTUS charter representatives are happy to assist you with finding the perfect vessel for you and your companions.

What does a Crewed Charter mean?

A crewed charter consists of a full-time captain and crew. The captain and crew handle all onboard duties such as navigation, maintaining provisions, meal preparation and service, housekeeping, and many other details and special requests to insure a successful trip.

What's a Bareboat Charter?

A Bareboat Charter is simply a boat that is leased to you without a skipper, or crew. Depending on the country, you will need to show some type of certification or previous boating experience. However, the option of adding a qualified skipper does exist. In this circumstance, the skipper takes full responsibility for the boat and duties such as navigation, maintaining provisions, refueling, and any other jobs that may require an expert's hand. The skipper will generally seek your assistance with several duties (dropping anchor, trimming the jib, raising the sails, etc) and you are free to take the wheel anytime. A Skippered Bareboat is typically much less expensive than a crewed yacht and gives a bit more freedom to relax as opposed to the responsibility of skippering the boat yourself full-time.

Do I have to have a special license or certificate to lease a Bareboat Charter?

While you don't need a license or certificate for a charter in the United States or the Caribbean per se, you will need to prove you possess a good amount of experience and skill to be given the green light to operate the yacht yourself. The charter company will require, through ALLTUS , a completed boating resume that will be examined and approved prior to finalizing any charter arrangements.

Typically in Europe, you will need to obtain a day skipper license. The universally accepted license is the ICC (International Certificate of Competence).

In both cases, it is beneficial to furnish all documentation of previous charters. If for any reason the charter operator decided to decline the Bareboat Charter request, there is still the option of the skippered Bareboat.

Will I need to bring a passport on the trip?

A passport is required for entry into all ports of the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Baltics, etc. A Visa may also be required of visits to some countries. If you are not sure if a Visa is required, contact your national immigration office to gain further information.

What is the difference between an All-inclusive" price and a "Plus Expenses" price?

"All-inclusive" rates include all costs associated with your charter. Everything from fuel, provisions, meals, docking fees, beverages, crew wages, etc will be included. So long as no changes are made to the itinerary, as well as, no special requests are made after the time of embarkation, the price shall not change.

"Plus Expenses" is a charter rate which does not include things such as beverages, fuel, communications, port fees, incidentals, etc. An advanced provisioning allowance will be created to essentially cover those costs. The captain can keep you up to date with the account status throughout the charter and provide you with a final balance at the end. These expenses usually amount to about 25% of the base charter rate. Should any of the allowance not be used, the balance will be credited back to you at the completion of the charter.

How do I book the yacht we've chosen?

After you and your ALLTUS representative have decided on the perfect vessel for your charter needs and the availability has been verified, you will received a detailed questionnaire requesting information on your travel arrangements, guest list, requests, and any special requirements you may have. Once the details are in order, you will receive your customized Charter Agreement and Itinerary for your approval and signature. Most yacht charter operators require a 50% deposit of the total charter rate to hold the reservation and dependent upon the operator, if no interim payments are due, the balance is required 30 days prior to the commencement of the charter.

Is there a cancellation fee after booking?

The ALLTUS cancellation fee usually mirrors that of the charter operator's and is clearly stated within the ALLTUS charter contract. You will have all contract information before you decide to finalize the charter agreement. A typical cancellation policy may look something like this:

90 days or more notice = 0%-5% of the charter rate

89-60 days notice - 25%of the charter rate

59-30 days notice - 50% of the charter rate

29 days or less - 100% of the charter rate

Why should I call ALLTUS first?

Because what a lot of folks don't know is that when they "shop around" for charter quotes before contacting ALLTUS, they have very nearly eliminated the basis for negotiating lowered rates, that is to say, why should the charter operators lease us the yacht at a discounted rate when they have you on the hook for the full retail charter amount? Your ALLTUS representative has the industry knowledge and experience to review the total marketplace to ensure that you receive the best travel solution at the most cost-effective price while drastically reducing the worries associated with planning the perfect trip.

Simply put, we, at ALLTUS, are dedicated to eliminating the obscenely high fees often associated with private charter while serving your needs around the clock and around the globe.
